Disaccharides- sucrose, lactose and maltose. Structure and biological functions of Structural polysaccharides (cellulose and chitin) and Storage polysaccharides (starch and glycogen) Heteropolysaccharides-glucosaminoglycans/mucopolysaccharides. Glycoconjugates- glycoproteins and glycolipids. Role of sugars in biological recognition. Blood group substances. Cell Structure and Metabolism Structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, intracellular organelles and their functions, comparison of plant and animal cells. Overview of metabolic processes - catabolism and anabolism. ATP - the biological energy currency. Carbohydrate metabolism: glycolysis and Kreb's cycle. |
