1 Phonetics : Speech Mechanism, Role of different organs of speech,
Sounds of English, Description of Sounds, Syllable and Stress,
Intonation and its functions.
2 a) Transcribing words phonemically with primary stress (using the symbols of Oxford
Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, 10th edition)
b) Marking stress and tones: Falling, Rising; Fall-Rise; Rise-Fall in sentences
(For blind candidates only in lieu of Unit-II a&b)
Purple Patch; Register; Received Pronunciation; Roman Jacobson; Language
Varieties of English; Soft Skills; Malapropism; Phonology; Humanism.
(The candidate is required to attempt any four items out of the six items)
3 History of English Language: Old English, Middle English, Latin, Celtic and
Scandinavian Influence on Old English, Renaissance and the English Language,
Change from Old to Modern English.
4 (a) Word formation process : Coinage; Borrowing; Compounding; Blending
Clipping; Back formation; Conversion; Acronyms; Derivation; Prefixes; Suffixes;
Affixes.
(b)Translation: Hindi to English
