About Us

The Department of Journalism & Mass Communication in the University was established in 1993 which then offered one course in Master of Arts in Mass Communication (MAMC). But keeping in view the needs of the growing media market, the Department was upgraded to the full-fledged Institute of Mass Communication & Media Technology (IMC&MT) in 2006.  The decision was inspired by the vision to have a premier media education, training and research centre of national repute.

            Keeping in view the growing need for trained manpower in the media and allied fields, the Institute has introduced a wide range of innovative courses in Journalism, Mass Communication & Media Technology like Graphics & Animation, Multimedia, Printing, & Packaging Technology. These courses are only available in IMC&MT in the region of North India. In production courses also, the Institute has sufficient infrastructure to support the training activities. Presently, the Institute is running 9 media courses with more than 600 students every year. Having the faculty of 19 highly qualified teachers, 5 well qualified technical executives and the state-of-art equipment and infrastructure, the IMC&MT can well boast of being the largest media institute in the country.  

      Media courses the Institute offers, not only prepare the students for jobs in various professions related to media such as journalism; public relations; advertising; radio and television production; printing; graphics; packaging; animation and entertainment industry, but also opens great avenues for entrepreneurship and establishment of organizations with high potential for providing employment to others.

  • Premier Institute: Institute is one of the pioneer Institutes of Northern India offering different professional courses in the field of Mass Communication, Graphics & Animation, Printing & Packaging and Multimedia.
  • Curriculum: All the courses are job oriented and designed according to needs of media industries. The curriculum reflects a sound blend of theory and practice with due emphasis on societal needs. All courses are being upgraded according to NEP-2020.
  • Faculty & Technical Staff: A team of young, dynamic and energetic teachers having professional as well as academic experience, qualified and trained technical executives and dedicated supporting staff is the core strength of the Institute.
  • Infrastructure: Institute has a separate state of art building with smart class rooms equipped with latest technology and well equipped Audio-Visual Studio.
  • Teaching & Research : Institute’s primary focus is on enriched classroom teaching as well as promotion of research activities. Institute has more than 50 Ph.D. awarded scholars to its credit. At present 15 scholars are enrolled and pursuing their Ph.D.
  • Training and Placement: The Institute lays emphasis on training and placement aspects of the students. Institute also takes up short term training courses and communication skills development programmes for Government organization, media persons and NGOs.
  • Integration with media institutions and industry: Integration with national/international media institutions and industry is must for the growth of the institute. The process has already been started and attempt is being made to establish a live linkage with industry and media institutions by inviting resource persons and through internship/training of the students as well as faculty. Institute has executed three MoUs with different industries i.e. Offset Printers’ Association Punjab, Himachal Pradesh Corrugated Box Manufacturers Association and with a news portal- Newshound India.
  • Alumni Association- Sense of pride for any institute can be developed if you have a good past. The institute organises a good number of activities both on campus and off campus to enrich the academic environment. An Alumni Association has been set up by the Institute. Institute has a good number of pass out who are working at respectable positions with media industry.
  • The university tag as an institution of excellence and its sound infrastructure is also an inbuilt strength of the Institute.

We are living in an information society dominated by digital media. The digital information and communication technologies have resulted in an information explosion and are drastically changing all aspects of human society

The information overload has generated the need of developing critical analysis of information to create knowledge that will lead to well being of humanity. In such a scenario of communication systems of today the society requires professional communicators who are not only creative and innovative in their approach but can also use new technologies to cater to the demands of ‘information seeking’ society.

Keeping in mind the changing communication world and alive to the need of  trained and educated professionals, the Institute of Mass Communication and Media Technology (IMCMT) of Kurukshetra University Kurukshetra has adopted a holistic approach to the issue.

It is running courses encompassing all aspects ranging from the traditional journalism, advertising, public relations to the younger and relatively new areas of graphics, animation, multimedia, printing and packaging. For those who wish to explore the domain of communication research the Institute offers PhD programme which enables them to widen their horizon and contribute significantly to basic and applied researches in communication.

The Institute with its young and dynamic faculty and it’s excellent infrastructure including its state-of-art production studio prepares the students for professional standards to meet the demands of ever changing media industry. Resource persons from the industry are invited on regular basis to interact with the students so that academic-industry gap can be bridged and their employability can be enhanced. The Institute has signed MoU s with reputed industries and organisations too. IMCMT is committed to produce trained media professionals with social commitment.
