The Department of Political Science was established in the year 1961 with Prof. Gopal Krishna as the founder Chairperson, an alumnus of Oxford University.
At present, the Department offers three courses, viz. M.A. in Political Science, M.A. in Defence and Strategic Studies and Ph.D. in Political Science. The total intake of students in M.A. Political Science is 60 and in M.A. Defence and Strategic Studies is 30. The intake of doctoral research scholars varies from session to session depending on the availability of seats. The thrust areas of research in the Department are India’s Foreign Policy, Indian Politics and Political Thought.

Established in the year 1961, the Department of Political Science is one of the oldest and most prestigious departments at Kurukshetra University. The programs offered in the Department are M.A. Political Science, M.A. Defence and Strategic Studies and Ph.D. Political Science. The postgraduate programmes of the Department follow the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with Learning Outcomes based Curriculum Framework (LOCF) in accordance with the UGC’s mandate. The Department’s faculty members strive to provide its students and research scholars with a learning and research experience grounded in the discipline’s theoretical traditions. It aims to equip them to face the challenges of life and to prepare them to become informed, active and engaged citizens. Special emphasis is laid on gender issues so that the students develop a gender sensitive perspective and learn to question and challenge the regressive practices prevalent in the society. The alumni of the department are well placed in various Universities, government colleges and government-aided colleges of the state. It is our endeavour to provide our students with the best academic exposure during their stay in the department.
