About Us

The Department of Home Science was established in 1998 under the able leadership of Prof. N. K. Mata, the founder head. The department offers a rich academic and research environment to the youthful minds, with an aim in making professionally productive and worthy Home Scientists in thrust areas. Department of Home Science is running two master’s programme namely M.Sc. Home Science (Food, Nutrition and Dietetics) since 1998 and M.Sc. Home Science (Human Development) since 2008. The Department of Home Science focuses on impeccable research facilities by offering the Doctorate of Philosophy degree in Foods and Nutrition (Ph.D. in Foods and Nutrition) since 2004. Our research program offers an elaborate curriculum that provides research scholars with an opportunity to get acquainted with research methodologies in different thrust areas of foods and nutrition. Under the student centric learning approach, practical training and field work are the utmost integral part of the curriculum that provides intended opportunities to enrich classroom learning.  Department provides well equipped laboratories to master students and research scholars for conducting experiments like food analysis, value added product development, biochemical analysis, body composition determination, diet counseling, psychology testing, early childhood education and family counseling.

We endeavour to provide finest learning environment and exemplary education to our students in order to acquire the best vocational skills for achieving the bright future in their respective career fields. M.Sc. in Food, Nutrition and Dietetics opens the career opportunities for students as registered dieticians, clinical dieticians, nutritionists, nutrition and wellness coach, food product development scientist, food analyst, public health nutritionist, sports nutritionist, food manager in addition to research and in academics. M.Sc. in Human Development prepare the young minds in the broad professional spectrum of human development as relationship/ child counsellor, family counsellor, child development project officer, in ICDS, NIPCCID, govt. organisations, NGOs, research and academics.

 

            Beyond curriculum, Home Science department celebrates dietetic day, breast feeding week, national nutrition month, world food day, pink October by organizing various competitions for overall grooming of the students. Under community outreach initiative department organize nutrition counseling, family counseling, nutrition awareness drives / rallies, nukkad natikas and street plays to create awareness in the community regarding various nutritional, health and societal issues. The goal is to provide facilities for the development of the overall personality to serve the nation.

The faculty members of department are dedicatedly working in the research areas of food analysis, clinical nutrition, public health nutrition, nutrition/ dietetic counselling, value added product development etc. In addition, our faculty also serves as members of editorial board, reviewers and actively involved in community outreach initiatives. More than 150 students qualified NET/ JRF. Our students are also recognized at national and international level for the award of scholarship for doctoral programme. We have a well-knit association with our alumni. Our alumni are well placed in academia, research institutes, govt. & non govt. organizations, industry and administration as well.

The department of Home Science was established in 1998 with following objectives:

  • To orient students to the sociocultural and economic environment effecting Dietary & Nutritional status of rural, urban and semi urban communities
  • To prepare the cadre of professionals to work with governmental and non-governmental organizations related to Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Human Development in various capacities.
  • To enhance self-employment potential through entrepreneurial skill training in quantity cookery, dietetics and family welfare.
  • To develop competency in the preparation of participatory and innovative nutritional programs for the dissemination of vital information to vulnerable sections of population.
  • To develop skills in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating various programs in the developmental sectors of the community. 

The Department offer customized research opportunities, where students have the chance to work with outstanding faculties on cutting edge problems and gain skills that transfer to professional development. The department has contributed over 150 research papers in journals of national and international repute. The department has produced 21 Ph.D. More than 150 students are JRF/NET/SLET qualified. Our alumni hold high-ranking positions in academia, research, industry and administration as well. Department has collaboration with institution of national repute for summer training/ internship and research. Kurukshetra University Kurukshetra has signed an MOU with UN World Food Programme, India and department of Home Science is collaborating in it. The Department is providing R&D facilities for a startup ‘Freshly’ 19 Agrotech Pvt. Ltd. A team of three Ph.D. scholars has been selected for pre incubation at KUTIC. They are currently working on the development of the prototype of their commercially viable products inculcating the farm to fork model into the core of their operation.
