About Us

Department of Biochemistry is running Master’s and Ph.D. programmes in Biochemistry since 1991. At present, there is an intake of 60 students (plus 25 additional/supernumerary seats) in M.Sc. programme and no. of seats is variable in Ph.D. program. M.Sc. curriculum follows CBCS-LOCF Scheme w.e.f. session 2020-21 and contents of the papers have relevance to local, regional, national & global development and direct bearing on Employability/Entrepreneurship/Skill development. The syllabi have been designed with program outcomes (Pos), program specific outcomes (PSOs) and course outcomes (Cos) for every course in the programme. The syllabi of  UGC-CSIR JRF/NET examinations and industrial requirements has also been taken into consideration while drafting the syllabi so that students can easily qualify such examinations and can also find placements in industry. The students are provided opportunities for seminars, experiment learning, group discussions, quizzes and summer/Industrial training during this program. Summer/Industrial training is of minimum 4 weeks duration in recognized industry/research laboratory in lieu of open elective paper (taught in 3rd Semester), and it is done during summer vacations falling between 2nd and 3rd Semesters. Till now a significant number of students have cleared JRF-UGC/CSIR, DBT-JRF, NET, GATE etc.

Presently, the department has four well-qualified teachers including 03 Professors and 01 Assistant Professor and four lecturers on part time basis. The faculty members of the department are involved in research in thrust areas of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and their role in Type II diabetes mellitus; purification and characterization of enzymes from Pediococcus acidilactici; development of Pediococcus acidilactici as a probiotic; study of SNPs and their role in thyroid and cardiovascular diseases; assessment of ameliorative effects of plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and plant growth regulators (PGRs) on stressed wheat plants; synthesis and characterization of biomass derived nanomaterials for biological applications. Faculty members are running research projects sponsored by different funding agencies like UGC, DST, HSCSIT, DAAD (Germany), KUK etc. The faculty members have earned distinction in the form of national and international awards like the DAAD fellowship, UICC fellowship, Young Scientist projects cum award, Fellows of academic bodies, DST travel grant to attend conference etc.

The Department has basic infrastructural facilities like Library with collection of about 1500 books, computer lab with Wifi/LAN facility, ICT enabled classroom, girl’s common room, three practical laboratories for Master’s teaching and two research laboratories equipped with latest instruments for research such as autoanalyzer, ELISA plate reader, PCR machine, incubator shaker, centrifuge machines, spectrophotometers, vacuum evaporator, Laminar air flow, oven etc. The department has well placed, proud alumni who is serving various sectors such as teaching, research, industry, administration in India as well as abroad.

Scope of Biochemistry

The study of biochemistry plays a crucial role in teaching and research in the fields of agriculture, biological, biomedical, environmental and pharmaceutical sciences and these fields are incomplete without a solid understanding and knowledge of biochemistry. A deep understanding of the underlying principles of biochemistry has allowed recent advancements in biotechnology, microbiology and its industrial applications. Students graduated from this department have solid theoretical and practical knowledge of biochemistry and qualify JRF examination to enter into Ph.D. programmes of reputed Institutions. Students also go abroad for Ph.D/Master’s program. They join pharma/diagnostic companies. Some other students do B.Ed. and are eligible for teaching at school level in the subjects of chemistry as well as biology. Some students join coaching Institutes like Akash, Allen etc.

DEPARTMENT VISION AND MISSION

VISION
To impart rigorous, dynamic and modern knowledge in an innovative manner to train and orient young minds to create further knowledge so as to develop the department as centre of excellence in the discipline of biochemistry.

MISSION
To provide a congenial learning environment and research based education in emerging fields of biochemistry so as to enhance problem solving skills and also priming them about their professional and ethical responsibilities.
