About Us

The University Library was started in Kalsia House with Sanskrit books and later on continues to be housed at two places i.e the main library in the College of Education and Indic Studies Section in the top floor of the Administrative Block.

The foundation stone of the present building was laid down on 17th July, 1967 by the then Chief Minister Rao Virender Singh and ultimately library was shifted in its new building in July 18, 1972 having plinth area 33000 Sq ft in three storeys’ Later on during 1984-85 due to shortage of space the building was extended and presently has plinth area 49230 sq. ft. 

In order to provide adequate reading space 57500 sq ft. area was added in the golden jubilee year of the university. This reading area now known as Golden Jubilee Reading Hall. After adding this library has area of 1,06,730 sq ft. .In order to provide adequate facilities to the readers, existing area comprising of 106730 sq ft has been extended by an area of 7475 sq ft area of Savitri Bai Phule Block. Thereby resulting in a total area of 114205 sq ft. JLN Library has a capacity of 1750 Readers.

Vision & Mission

The mission of the JLN Library system is to facilitate creation of new knowledge through the acquisition, organization and dissemination of information resources and providing for value added services.

The main thrust of the library is to continue to improve the quality of services and facilities, achieve high degree of users’ satisfaction and endeavour to facilitate right information to the right user, at the right time.

Locations/Block:

Central Library comprises of Three Blocks.

1) Ranganathan Block:-3 Floors

  1. Ground Floor:-Librarian Office, Circulation section, Registration Section, Technical Section, Acquisition Section, Reference Section, Library Office, Text and Book Stack Area, Photostat Section and Newspaper Reading Area.
  2. First Floor:-Internet Enable Computer Lab, Book Stack Area and Reading Area.
  3. Second Floor:-Periodical Section, Manuscript Section, Book Stack Area and Reading Area.

2) Central Library Golden Jubilee Reading Hall Block – Five floors and all Floors are used for Reading Purpose having a Seating Capacity of 1270.

3) Central Library Savitri Bai Phule Block

  1. Ground Floor for Reading Area and Book Stack Area.
  2. Frist Floor for Conference/meeting Hall and Book Stack Area.

 Library Timings

Library has a very flexible working schedule throughout the year. It opens before the institutions opening time and closes after the closing time so that readers have an opportunity to use the library without disturbance to their academic schedules.

Circulation Counter       9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. (Monday to Saturday except gazetted Holiday)

Reading Areas               9.00 a.m. to 10.00 p.m. (Except National Holiday, Haryana Day and Holi)

GJRH                            9.00 a.m. to 12.00 midnights (Except National Holiday, Haryana Day and Holi)

Moreover Savitri Bai Phule Block Reading Hall remains open 24 x 7.

Purchase Committee

The Library has an active Library Purchase Committee (LPC) which meets 3-4 times in a financial/academic year to make all decisions concerning the purchase of library resources. The Committee works hard in best utilising the funds available for Library resources. The Committee is constituted by Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Every Year.

Events

JLN Library organizes various meaningful and highly effective research and academic programmes periodically with the sole aim to add more value in the learning and upskilling our user community. Many of our events primarily focus on students and researchers to help them get the best possible training/ learning through meaningful events.

We regularly conduct/ organize information literacy programmes on search skills, usage of database, citation standards, citation metrics, avoiding plagiarism, using plagiarism detection tool, etc.; webinars/ online training programmes; Periodically exhibit books on special days/themes; internship/ training programme for the students of Library and Information Science; library tours for the better understanding of library resources and services, etc.

LIBRARY GOVERNANCE:

              The Library Governing Body – Library Committee – formulates library policies for the guidance of the University Librarian. The constitution of the committee is given below:

  2. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Vice –Chairman)
  3. The Dean Academic Affairs
  4. The Chairpersons of Departments
  5. One Person nominated by the Executive Council
  6. The President Kurukshetra University Students Association

  8. The Librarian (Ex-officio member & Secretary)

BUDGETARY PROVISIONS:

The Library receives Budget Provision (recurring and non-recurring) out of University Grant. In addition to the above UGC Grant/State Grant is also received for enhancing collection and services. Modernization of Library, including books and journals is allocated to meet the need based requirement of Central Library including Departmental Libraries.
